Jesus saves sinners Part 4 (and final thoughts)

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17 Sermon: Jesus Saves Sinners (to end) Song: Christ & Hope Jesus saves sinners part 4 point #3 of sermon and conclusion: -Jesus identifies with the insignificant.  -v 11 and 12 we read of King Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of deportation. The last rightful King of the southern kingdom before it fell to Babylon in 586 BC.  -These men- are unknown to us! We only read of them one time in scripture and its right here. -Paul will continue these themes as seen in both 2 Corinthians 8:9 and 1 Corinthians 1:26 Jesus identifies with the insignificant because He came to save all of His people from their sins. Questions/Thoughts/Wrap up: 1) Take time to read the verses from Paul, what stands out to you most about how Paul is describing 'But God chose..." 2) Looking at all 3 identified groups in the sermon outline, together with the last 2 other sermons; is this how you would have originally read through the genealogy of Christ? Wrap-up/Thoughts The ge...

Jesus Saves Sinners Pt 3

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17 Sermon: J esus saves sinners through 26:35 Song: What Child is This Jesus Saves Sinners  #2 Jesus identifies with the immoral. The women Jesus identify with did not have the best reputations. -Their sins are not even easy to explain in public places when children are present -BUT- Jesus saves sinners. The unrighteous, the sick, the unwell. Rahab- Woman of faith ( mentioned in Hebrews 11) yet also a gentile and known for her prostitution Ruth-a godly woman as well; yet again, a Moabitess and gentile- she would have been excluded from the family of God Bathsheba, not mentioned by name but by her gentile husband's name. It was have been against the law for her marriage and on top of that she becomes the adulterous lover of King David. Tamar- conceives her children through Judah. This account is best read for yourself in the scriptures. In the questions portion I have linked one of the best sermons I ever heard on this passage given by Voddie Baucham. -Matthew...

Jesus Saves Sinners pt 2

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17 Sermon: Jesus Saves Sinners through marker 18:30 Song: God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman Jesus Saves Sinners pt 2 1) Jesus identified with idolaters - His family tree is full of idolatry! Often we look at Abraham, Issac, Jacob...David as pious saints of old. However: Abraham- took another woman to try and create his own son of promise (Hagar and Ishmael); Jacob-sees his older brother coming towards him and sends the lesser loved wife and children in front of him as a buffer (among other things Jacob does); David-has adulterous relationship and sets in order the marching orders for Bathsheba's husband death; Solomon with 700 wives and 300 concubines... The truth remains Jesus saves sinners.  The genealogy list goes on-Kings of Judah (read their stories in 1+2 Kings) Judah, Abijah, Asaph,Jotham-they refused to take down the high places of worship; Ahaz we read in 2 Kings burned his own son as an offering and worshipped false gods under every hill, high place and u...

Jesus Saves Sinners PT 1

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17 Sermon: Jesus saves sinners (up to minute marker 8:50) Song: O How a rose er blooming Fittingly, as we heard last week that the proclamation of Jesus as the Christ, the next sermon we listen to will be Jesus Saves Sinners. After all, the entirety of Christmas is that Jesus came...to save His people from their sin.  As was the last two weeks this will be a sermon divided into 3 or 4 parts and below is a rough outline of the message and then some study thoughts/questions.  Study the goodness of Jesus with me this day! Jesus Saves Sinners   People are often fascinated by their genealogy.  It links us to our past, brings meaning to our present and pushes us forward in our future. -What if we had access to the genealogy of the the greatest person the world has ever known?     We do! Jesus genealogy is found here in Matthew 1.  It links our past to Him, that we belong to him in the present  and will reign and rule with him in t...

Jesus is the Christ (final)

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17 Sermon: J esus is the Christ Minute marker 34:00 to the end Song: Christ Jesus is the Christ #3 Jesus is the Christ because He is the seed of New Humanity. -He is the Seed of those who come after Him. -There are 3 separate paragraphs and 3 separate lists in this passage. It is organized  in a theological way of 3 groups of 14 generations. Why would it be list this?  -A simple explanation 14 is 7 doubled. 7 is the number of perfection in the bible.  There are therefore 6 lists of 7. Matthew could be suggesting that God's 6 days of preparing the way is complete with the 7th coming into Christ. Christ enters the world bringing it into a new Sabbath rest. -Jesus is the beginning of New Humanity. The book of the 'genealogy of Christ' the term genealogy is only used here and in Genesis when we see the creation of the heavens and the earth (Septuagint). -Restoration, newness and life. Jesus restores to sinners what Adam had in the beginning...fellowshi...

Jesus is the Christ Part III

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17, Isaiah 9,55; Jeremiah 31; Ezekiel 34; Amos 9; Acts 15 Sermon: Jesus is the Christ: minute marker 23:00 through 33:25 Song: Silent Night Jesus is the Christ- Part 3, Point #2 #2 the Seed of David -About 1000 years after Abraham, David. Son of Jesse. Why David? He was not Israel's 1st king (the people had chosen Saul) but the 2nd king in succession, however, he was the 1st chosen by God of the line of Judah (Genesis 49) David was a man after God's own heart, whom every king after would be measured. Yet still not the promised King.  2 Samuel 7 we see David wishing to build a house for the Lord but the Lord saying rather he would build a forever house (lineage) for David. However just like Abraham, David;s son would not be the ultimate Son. -God's promises do not come true because of human effort, it is only the work of the Lord and the Lord alone.  -Christ alone is the answer, The lineage of Jesus is a mess of human sinners, but it points us to Jesus...

Jesus is the Christ Pt II

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17; further study, Genesis 12,15,17,22 and Galatians 3:7-18 Sermon: Jesus is the Christ minute marker 10:00 through 23:00 Song: Who Would Have Dreamed Jesus is the Christ- Part II The way we see Jesus is the Christ: #1 The Seed of Abraham -Matthew is unlike the other genealogies     John starts at eternity, "the eternality of the Lord." Mark has no genealogy and Luke's is gathered together differently and starts with Joseph and goes through to Adam. It is written for a gentile audience that Jesus is the Savior of all mankind. Jesus is the better Adam for all of mankind. -Brings us to Matthew, written by a Jew for the Jewish reader. Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah. He starts with Abram because, he is the formal beginning to the Jewish people. Genesis 12 Shows the faithfulness and promises of God. Abram called out of his nation to be a Father of a new nation. Gen 12:3 (we will see later this also linked to Galatians 3:7-18) Genesis 15- Fire pot and ...

Jesus is the Christ (pt I)

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17 Sermon: Jesus is the Christ by Daniel Hyde Song: Hark the Herald Angels Sing Lets jump back into our Advent study! With the exception I linked the wrong sermon last week. Jesus Saves Sinners is the sermon we will study NEXT week. My apologies! Same pastor but this is this is message 1 in the series. Notes through marker 11:01 Jesus is the Christ -Jesus is the Christ the sent One of God, We are reading this in the Gospel of Matthew. It is called the gospel because it is the good news of Jesus Christ. It proclaims who He is. That He is the only Way to God. It tells of His life, death and resurrection. Matthew AKA Levi was a Jewish tax collector who was converted and called by Jesus. He is the author of this book. This would be a world changing proclamation- He (Jesus) was the Anointed one, the promised one. The prophet, priest and king. In the Old Testament we see prophets heralding, priests making sacrifices and kings ruling- however they were all just types, o...

Prepared for Ancient History pt IV

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17 Sermon: Prepared for Ancient History *18:30-end Song: Matthew 1:17 We will wrap up this message today, and I will link at the bottom for the sermon for next week.  #3 There is no obscurity that can hind God's work through us.  - From the rise and fall of the house of David, to a carpenter and his expectant wife there is no detail overlooked by the Lord. Thoughts/ Application: In the back of an overcrowded in, in a stable, in a tiny town to an unknown couple; this is the moment, the exact and perfect moment in time the Lord came down to dwell among us. This is where the Word became flesh. This setting, this year, these people. There was nothing random about it, or happenstance. This should give us comfort, great comfort. The genealogy of Christ should give us confidence that God always keeps His promises, and every promise that the Lord has made finds its way through Jesus. Q. Have you ever had a chance to view the genealogy slowly, and think through e...

Prepared for Ancient History Pt III

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17 Sermon: Prepared for Ancient History through minute marker 18:30 #2 There is no difficulty that can halt God's purposes for us. - God's fingerprint can be seen regularly moving through history -4 names appear that would have shocked the readers as they read this genealogy Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba Tamar- pretended to be a cult prostitute Rahab-ran an "inn of ill repute" Ruth- a Gentile, a Moabitess Bathsheba- Adulteress Not only were these graven sins not covered they were included in the very genealogy of Jesus Christ. + God is not paralyzed by my past sin.  + Peter would state that what wicked men did was a part of God's sovereign purposes - their sin could not halt God's saving grace. + This is the message of the Gospel. Summarized by Paul where sin abounded, grace 'super' abounded. Reflection thoughts/questions: The message of the birth of Christ is the good news that Jesus came to conquer sin and death once and for...

Prepared for Ancient history Pt 2

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17 Sermon: Sinclair Ferguson from time stamp 7:00- 13:03 . Song: O Come, All Ye Faithful   Notes continued: 3 lessons Matthew is teaching us about the way in which the promises of God come to their fulfillment in the Birth of the Lord Jesus Christ:    1) There is no unreliability in God's promises to us.    2) There is no difficulty that can halt God's purposes for us.    3) There is no obscurity that can hinder God's work through us. #1 Although in many ways this (genealogy) is mess and untidy it underscores that even through 2000 years of messiness God's promises are always reliable. -Abraham and Sara. They contrived to mess God's promises by trying to take them into their own hands- yet through it all God kept His promises. -David. With even greater personal lapses. A man after God's own heart, yet still prone to sin. Matthew chastely writes this, "David, the father of Solomon, by the wife of Uriah, the Hittite. +need to learn...

Prepared in Ancient History (Pt 1)

Matthew 1:1-17 Sermon: Sinclair Ferguson- up to time stamp 6:56 today. Song: O Come, O Come Emmanuel For the duration of the study we will be looking at messages about this passage of scripture. An outline of each days portion will be here plus questions to chew through as we meditate on the Word through this Advent season! Ancient History: -In all the verses of the New Testament this opening passage is one most people skip over. Whether it be for lack of desire to pronounce them all, missing the understanding of the importance of the passage or wanting to skip forward to the birth of Jesus. Matthew's genealogy is a genealogy with a difference- there are 3 deliberate breaks - Abraham to David (14 generations) - David to the exile in Babylon (14 generations) - Exile in Babylon to the birth of Jesus (14 generations) The purpose the this genealogy was not to be full, but to be deliberate- thus the 14,14,14. Purpose: to show and teach the important things of the identity of whose gene...

Time

Matthew 1:1-17; Genesis 1:1, John 1:1; 1 John 1:1 Time. It is something that we cannot control, we cannot wish away, or speak into existence. Once we spend our time we cannot get it back. We operate within time yet the Lord; He is not ruled by it.  We can compartmentalize the stories of the Bible in this way. The Old Testament and the New. People, rather than historical and real become stories and isolated events, rather than the grand workings of God's redemptive plan.  As we press forward, I encourage you to take a step back. As we look at the genealogy in depth look and the breadth and depth and details of it. James Boice puts is so well, "It is a helpful corrective for the way we often think. Isn't it true that we tend to think of the great acts of God in history as being rather sudden." Every moment is held and purposeful. Psalm 139 is an amazing reminder to us, that He numbered our days as yet there were none. And God orchestrated the coming of His Son to perf...
