Prepared for Ancient History Pt III

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17

Sermon: Prepared for Ancient History through minute marker 18:30

#2 There is no difficulty that can halt God's purposes for us.

- God's fingerprint can be seen regularly moving through history

-4 names appear that would have shocked the readers as they read this genealogy

Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba

Tamar- pretended to be a cult prostitute

Rahab-ran an "inn of ill repute"

Ruth- a Gentile, a Moabitess

Bathsheba- Adulteress

Not only were these graven sins not covered they were included in the very genealogy of Jesus Christ.

+ God is not paralyzed by my past sin.

+ Peter would state that what wicked men did was a part of God's sovereign purposes - their sin could not halt God's saving grace.

+ This is the message of the Gospel. Summarized by Paul where sin abounded, grace 'super' abounded.

Reflection thoughts/questions:

The message of the birth of Christ is the good news that Jesus came to conquer sin and death once and for all. There is no sin Jesus did not die for, that He did not know of. It was accounted to Him that if we are His; His righteousness is than accounted to us.

This is mind-boggling good news. (Which we will study more in depth next week)

Q: Are you familiar with the 4 women mentioned in this part of the sermon? If not take the time to read through their stories.

Q: Do you cling to your past sins more than the saving grace of the Gospel. Do you have assurance in your salvation or do you constantly look back? Where sin abounded, grace has abounded all the more. It is the joy of our Christmas season, and the joy of our salvation, Jesus was born! Just like the prophets foretold- and he died and rose again to save His people from their sins.
