Jesus is the Christ- Part II

The way we see Jesus is the Christ:

#1 The Seed of Abraham

-Matthew is unlike the other genealogies

John starts at eternity, "the eternality of the Lord." Mark has no genealogy and Luke's is gathered together differently and starts with Joseph and goes through to Adam. It is written for a gentile audience that Jesus is the Savior of all mankind. Jesus is the better Adam for all of mankind.

-Brings us to Matthew, written by a Jew for the Jewish reader. Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah. He starts with Abram because, he is the formal beginning to the Jewish people.

Genesis 12 Shows the faithfulness and promises of God. Abram called out of his nation to be a Father of a new nation. Gen 12:3 (we will see later this also linked to Galatians 3:7-18)

Genesis 15- Fire pot and burning torch. God's promises are based solely on himself. 1st of many times that God will reiterate His promises to his sinful, doubting people. Just as he still does today through signs and seals (Baptism and the Lord's Supper)

Genesis 17- It will be an everlasting covenant

Genesis 22- v.18 in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.

So we see this continue because Abraham had Issac- yet not all the nations of the earth were blessed through him, because he died...and so the genealogy continues and Issac begot Jacob...until it receives its fulfillment in Christ, through whom all the nations  are blessed.

We can rejoice in this inheritance as well because we have been grafted into this family.

Paul further explains this in Galatians 3:7-18- now the promises remain. The offspring (singular form) who is Christ. God promises long ago One Son, One Seed and now we can see that Jesus is that promise.

Thoughts/Questions:

1.Where we pick up the sermon is discussing the Nicene Creed. If you aren't familiar with it you can find it here. Also here is a helpful article and short podcast about creeds and if you are wondering what and why!

2. Are you familiar with the promises of the Seed of Abraham? In what context have you been taught this at the church you attend? Maybe you have never connected the two. Take time ti read/listen to the scripture today that link the entirety of the scriptures together under one redemptive story.

3. I am not crying you are crying! LOL. By the time I finish taking notes and reading through Galatians I feel myself overwhelmed with the goodness and promises of God through Jesus. It makes me look at Christmas differently again and again. We are celebrating truly one of the greatest moments of all eternal time. The Seed has come. Woah. May I be able to place my doubts and fears at the feet of He who has promised and is faithful.
