Jesus is the Christ- Part 3, Point #2
#2 the Seed of David
-About 1000 years after Abraham, David. Son of Jesse. Why David? He was not Israel's 1st king (the people had chosen Saul) but the 2nd king in succession, however, he was the 1st chosen by God of the line of Judah (Genesis 49)
David was a man after God's own heart, whom every king after would be measured. Yet still not the promised King.
2 Samuel 7 we see David wishing to build a house for the Lord but the Lord saying rather he would build a forever house (lineage) for David. However just like Abraham, David;s son would not be the ultimate Son.
-God's promises do not come true because of human effort, it is only the work of the Lord and the Lord alone.
-Christ alone is the answer,
The lineage of Jesus is a mess of human sinners, but it points us to Jesus being the only one who can fulfill God's promises.
The prophets longed for this Messiah and Matthew is pointing out, He who was prophesied has come!
We see the prophets Isaiah (9, 7), Jeremiah (31), Ezekiel (34), and Amos (9) all prophecy of the One who was to be the forever king. In Acts 15 we see it taught on by James.
Thoughts/Questions:
1. The Heidelburg states in Q and A #35 What does it mean that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary? A: That God's eternal Son, who is and continues true and eternal God, took upon Himself the very nature of man of the flesh and blood of the virgin Mary, by the operation of the Holy Spirit, that He might also be the true seed of David, like unto His brethren in all things, sin excepted.
And question #36 further teachers Q: What benefit do you receive from the holy conception and birth of Christ? A: That He is our Mediator, and with His innocence and perfect holiness covers, in the sight of God, my sin wherein I was conceived and brought forth.
In G.I Williamson's Study guide of the Heidelberg he points out that Jesus asked these two questions "What do you think about the Christ, and whose Son is he?" The Jews would answer the Son of David.
How well do you understand the doctrine of the birth of Jesus Christ and what that means in regards to Jesus as the seed of David?
2. Do you have a firm grasp in the historical, biological truth that Jesus was God in the flesh? That He was born of the virgin Mary to suffer under Pontius Pilate, be crucified, buried and raise again?!
3. Christmas is an absolute amazing time of year where we get to reflect on the realities of God made flesh!
