Jesus Saves Sinners Pt 3

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17

Sermon: Jesus saves sinners through 26:35

Song: What Child is This

Jesus Saves Sinners  #2

Jesus identifies with the immoral.

The women Jesus identify with did not have the best reputations.

-Their sins are not even easy to explain in public places when children are present

-BUT- Jesus saves sinners. The unrighteous, the sick, the unwell.

Rahab- Woman of faith ( mentioned in Hebrews 11) yet also a gentile and known for her prostitution

Ruth-a godly woman as well; yet again, a Moabitess and gentile- she would have been excluded from the family of God

Bathsheba, not mentioned by name but by her gentile husband's name. It was have been against the law for her marriage and on top of that she becomes the adulterous lover of King David.

Tamar- conceives her children through Judah. This account is best read for yourself in the scriptures. In the questions portion I have linked one of the best sermons I ever heard on this passage given by Voddie Baucham.

-Matthew omits what we would consider the women of faith, the Jewish women, Rebecca, Sarah etc. He specifically chooses the women scripture and his audience would reprehend. Gentiles, fornicators, etc.

Why? Because Jesus came to save sinners.

Questions/thoughts to ponder:

1) It is really easy to read this through our current modern eyes and cringe. How dare they speak of women like this, or cluster people into such groups, but in order to accurately get the correct picture of what is being taught we need to take off our modern perceptions and read it with a worldview that is broad enough to see it in both ancient and modern contexts.

2)As you read through the old testament have you ever connected all these women who were interwoven into the very fabric of Jesus Christ? It is remarkable. Listen to this sermon (abbreviated version) when you get a chance about Judah.

3) Have you been able to start tracing the line of Jesus genealogy back and then forward to his birth yet in a way that makes you marvel? God is faithful, and all of His promises find their promises yes and Amen in Christ.
