Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17
Sermon: Jesus saves sinners (up to minute marker 8:50)
Song: O How a rose er blooming
Fittingly, as we heard last week that the proclamation of Jesus as the Christ, the next sermon we listen to will be Jesus Saves Sinners. After all, the entirety of Christmas is that Jesus came...to save His people from their sin.
As was the last two weeks this will be a sermon divided into 3 or 4 parts and below is a rough outline of the message and then some study thoughts/questions.
Study the goodness of Jesus with me this day!
Jesus Saves Sinners
People are often fascinated by their genealogy.
It links us to our past, brings meaning to our present and pushes us forward in our future.
-What if we had access to the genealogy of the the greatest person the world has ever known?
We do! Jesus genealogy is found here in Matthew 1. It links our past to Him, that we belong to him in the present and will reign and rule with him in the future.
Matthew's grand plan of his writing is to share the gospel by proclaiming that Jesus is the Christ, the promised one, the Messiah (See sermon last week). We see how all of God's promises are yes and Amen in Christ!
#2 purpose of the genealogy- Jesus save sinners.
3 points we will look at this sermon:
1) Jesus was identified with idolaters
2) identified with immoral
3) identified with the insignificant.
In saying this Matthew is saying, Jesus saves idolaters, immoral and the insignificant.
Thoughts/Questions to ponder:
1) Has studying the genealogy of Christ given you confidence in who Jesus is? Do you feel better equipped to share the hope of Jesus and His saving gospel the more you see God's redemptive plan fulfilled through His birth?
2) Reverend Daniel Hyde identifies 3 groups- do you find the groupings odd/surprising/comforting/fill-in-the-blank...
3) How can you share the hope of our Savior with people this week as you celebrate the coming of the Messiah?!
