Declared

Read: Isaiah 9:1-7

Sing: O Come O Come Emmanuel

Memorize: Isaiah 9:1-2

As we begin to study this portion of scripture, it is all we can do but meditate on the realities that this was prophesied hundreds of years before the birth of Christ. The same Lord who spoke into existence the stars and moon, plants and animals, declared this truth through His prophet Isaiah.

We read in Isaiah 7:14, "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel." Yet- Why there therefore? One commentary writes, "Since Ahaz rejected the sign God offered him individually for the present, God would give a sign to a far greater audience to confirm the truth of all that He has said."

We as believers this side of the the cross can rejoice in the fact that what God says he will do- He does...declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done. (see Isaiah 46:9-10). Romans 1:2-4 tells us...the Gospel of God, which was promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, concerning His Son... and Christmas is the time we can celebrate and share this good news- that the promise that was made beforehand (before time even existed) and then extended through His prophets- has come to pass.

Every time we say Merry Christmas we are declaring that what God has said, He has done. A true declaration of the Gospel truth. The I Am, has done, and will do again. Yet this time it will not be humbly and lowly- but victorious as a King. And we can trust this truth because God has fulfilled what He has spoken. Every Christmas hung sung from our lips or played in the background is a praise and worship that we serve a promise keeping God. May we find comfort and joy in this truth during Advent this year.

Journal: How can we find comfort in the promises fulfilled by God at Christmas? Emmanuel means "God with us," do we hold that truth in reality in our hearts and minds?
